Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Counselling

Do I need to prepare for my first session?

No preparation is needed. You do not need to know what to say or have a clear goal before starting. Many people come to counselling feeling unsure where to begin, and we can take time to explore this together.

How long is a counselling session?

Sessions are 50 minutes long and take place at a regular, agreed time.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies from person to person. Some people attend for a short period to focus on a specific issue, while others choose to work more longer term. This can be discussed and reviewed together as therapy progresses.

What happens in a session?

Sessions offer a space to talk, reflect and explore what feels important to you. While my work is informed by CBT and may include gentle structure where helpful, sessions remain collaborative and guided by your needs.

Do I need to have a diagnosis?

No. You do not need a diagnosis or a clear explanation of what you are experiencing. Counselling is open to anyone who feels they may benefit from support.

Is everything I say confidential?

Confidentiality is a core part of counselling. What you share in sessions is treated with care and respect. There are some limits to confidentiality, such as where there is a serious risk of harm or legal obligation, which will be explained clearly before counselling begins.

Is online counselling effective?

Yes. Many people find online counselling to be effective and accessible. It can offer flexibility and comfort, particularly if attending in person is difficult. Online sessions are delivered via Zoom and discussed to ensure they feel suitable for you.

What if I'm not sure counselling is right for me?

It is completely normal to feel unsure. We can arrange an initial conversation to talk things through, answer questions and decide whether counselling feels like the right step for you at this time.

What if I become upset during a session?

Strong emotions can be part of the therapeutic process and are welcome in the counselling space. Sessions move at your pace, and support is provided to help you feel contained and safe.

How do I get started?

You can get in touch via the contact form or email. I aim to respond within 24 hours, and we can then discuss next steps together.
